Viggo Mortensen About The Road In 2009

Some of us are maybe growing impatient with The Road: the release, first expected in November 2008, has been pushed to 2009 without any official date yet... Rumors of a straight to DVD release are even surfacing. But most would rather see a theatrical release as soon as possible.

Fortunately Viggo Mortensen, who plays the role of the Man in The Road, is here to reassure us (via AICN) that the movie is in good hands:

"My understanding is that they know that they've got a story that a lot of people want to see, because of the book. [...] And, the people that read the book, which are many, were very moved by it and by this relationship between this boy and this man, in particular, in that setting. And, I think that they are really aware of the fact that they've got one chance to do it, and if there's any little things that they still want to work on a little more, to get it just right, whether it's the music --I don't know what it is -- a variety of things, they want to do it right. And, if you rush it out before you feel in good conscience it's there ... So, I am disappointed. I wanted to see it. I want to see how it is."
Viggo Mortensen

They better make it right indeed! People who have read Cormac McCarthy's book would not forgive a loose adaptation of the novel. So, even if we have to wait a bit more, it's worth it. Just by judging from the pictures of The Road I feel it could contend for an Oscar: both Viggo and Kodi looks amazing in their respective roles as father and son.

The Road Pictures

Here below some pictures from The Road, upcoming post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie starring Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee:
(Click on a picture to enlarge it.)

The movie was mainly filmed in Pennsylvania. It was chosen for its tax breaks and its abundance of locations that looked post-apocalyptic: coalfields, dunes, and run-down parts of Pittsburgh. Some scenes have also been shot in parts of New Orleans that had been ravaged by Hurricane Katrina and on Mount St. Helens in Washington. Filming on days with bad weather and using some minors digital enhancements (to take away any greenery) the result is a really bleak atmosphere that looks so real!

The Road Movie Poster

Here below the first teaser poster of the Road, upcoming movie directed by John Hillcoat and based on the book of the same name written by Cormac McCarthy:

The Road Movie Teaser
If you're wondering why the name of Guy Pearce is on this movie poster of the Road, take a look to the cast of the Road:

- Viggo Mortensen as the Man. Mortensen explained the interaction of the father with his son, "They’re on this difficult journey, and the father is basically learning from the son."

- Kodi Smit-McPhee as the Boy.

- Charlize Theron as the Wife, who appears in flashback. Theron joined the film because she was a fan of the book and had previously worked with producer Nick Wechsler on the 2000 film The Yards. The character will have a larger role in the film than she did in the book. Hillcoat said of the expanded role, "I think it's fine to depart from the book as long as you maintain the spirit of it."

- Michael K. Williams as a thief.

- Robert Duvall as an old, dying man.

- and Guy Pearce as a father wandering with his family.

If you've read the original book you may guess what is the role of Guy Pearce!

New official posters of the Road have been unveiled:

Viggo Mortensen is really the best choice to portray the man in the Road!

The Road Is Full Of Cannibals In November 2008

The Road is a post-apocalyptic movie based on the novel of the same name written by Cormac McCarthy. The film is directed by John Hillcoat and is starring Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee as a father and his son in a journey toward the coast across a blasted landscape. The Road should be released in mid November 2008. Update: The Road will be released on October 16, 2009. :(

The Plot:
"A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and, when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing: just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food--and each other." (source: IMDb)

A rather terrifying detail about those lawless bands: some have decided to reinstate the harshest slavery and to resort to cannibalism to feed themselves hence transforming a world already bleak into a real nightmare...

The journey of the two heroes of The Road is no sinecure!

The Road will certainly be less spectacular than Doomsday or Mad Max, but that's probably what will make the Road even more powerful... The plot somewhat reminds of the TV show Jeremiah with Luke Perry. But The Road takes place in a world falling in absolute savagery, like a real end to civilization.

May God prevent Mankind to fall back into such savagery!
