Viggo Mortensen About The Road In 2009
Some of us are maybe growing impatient with The Road: the release, first expected in November 2008, has been pushed to 2009 without any official date yet... Rumors of a straight to DVD release are even surfacing. But most would rather see a theatrical release as soon as possible.
Fortunately Viggo Mortensen, who plays the role of the Man in The Road, is here to reassure us (via AICN) that the movie is in good hands:
"My understanding is that they know that they've got a story that a lot of people want to see, because of the book. [...] And, the people that read the book, which are many, were very moved by it and by this relationship between this boy and this man, in particular, in that setting. And, I think that they are really aware of the fact that they've got one chance to do it, and if there's any little things that they still want to work on a little more, to get it just right, whether it's the music --I don't know what it is -- a variety of things, they want to do it right. And, if you rush it out before you feel in good conscience it's there ... So, I am disappointed. I wanted to see it. I want to see how it is."

They better make it right indeed! People who have read Cormac McCarthy's book would not forgive a loose adaptation of the novel. So, even if we have to wait a bit more, it's worth it. Just by judging from the pictures of The Road I feel it could contend for an Oscar: both Viggo and Kodi looks amazing in their respective roles as father and son.

I hope the film remains true to the eseence of the book and the characters, but I certainly don't expect the film to mimic the book, but to release its truth in an equal creation. I have been waiting eagerly for this release and hope the editors and director do not cave in to Hollywood pressure to make it "nice" or give it an "American" ending to appease. I have wondered if the delay in release has a lot to do with the 2008 downturn and difficulties? If the producers are afraid of releasing it as too depressing for the times, stop worrying and "trust your audience." None of us are dumb out there, and the ones who would go to see this film will still go. This was not and never a film for everybody anyway.
i'm worried about the expanded role of the wife to appease theron who has hijacked the film
I am worried as well about an extended role of "the wife" to make as what Diane stated a "Hollywood story." I am troubled that they might even go as far as to make an underlying "love story" to appease Theron in the film. The book was mainly about the relationship beetween "The Man" and "The boy." I have a feeling the ill-sighted hollywood producers might have to pretty it up and add an unnecessary character relationship which the book clearly had not portrayed.
Im waiting..... We were so excited when it was supposed to be released in the fall then again around the holidays. I was happy to find out it wasnt released yet as we want to see it on the big screen.
I just finished reading The Road and loved it. I am hoping that they stick to the overall theme of the book and not detract from it at all, its an incredible story. I couldn't put the book down,it just carries you along on the trip. Amazing story telling, maybe of things to come?
I wouldn't mind a bit more attention on the relationship between Viggo and Charlize as long as it works to advance the relationship between Cody and Viggo, but becuase most of the scenes with Charlize are in flashbacks, I can't see them doing any major damage to the awsome plotline. Doubtlessly, Hollywood will not just have Cody with Viggo for the majority of the time,but I think it would definately work.
In "I Am Legend", (a book I highly recommend if you liked "The Road"), the main character is by himself, (except for flashbacks) for the majority of the book and it worked surprisingly well as a movie, so I think this will also fail to dissapoint audiences.
yes alot of people read the book and I was one of them but how many people own a copy which does not have the Oprah stamp on it

Bad enough the studio is dragging their heels, but now there's nothing new on the movie surfacing.
Son of a gun...they're shooting for Oscar season aren't they? Well, it's probably gonna be worth the wait. I've read the book several times, even listened to it twice over on books-on-tape, but I still can't wait to see the movie! I love seeing a single piece of art in so many forms.
I'm actually a bit nervous about this film. I don't believe every book needs to be adapted to the screen, especially when it's our good hollywood friends trying to replicate the work of Cormac McCarthy. I'm horribly afraid they'll ruin it in order to appease the masses, and I still don't know whether or not I'll see it upon its release. I sincerly hope they kept the meaning of the story true and did not taint it in order to pocket some extra cash...
well meggy, those hollywood friends are the same ones that transformed Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men into a hit movie, I don't know about you but I was optimistic when i found out that they were going to do it again with The Road. No doubt this movie will be great.
I think the movie would be fantastic without any music at all. But what are the odds of that happening?
Just saw a special advance screening with Viggo last night - best film of the year!! He will win the Oscar, no doubt! The performance of a lifetime. Cheers!
